A video of water gushing through the roof at the airport in Guwahati has gone viral on social media. Heavy rain for little over an hour on Monday evening caused water to enter through the ceiling of the newly-made extension of the passenger lounge.
Water entered the baggage screening area of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport through the air-conditioning vents, light sockets and the gaps between ceiling tiles. The video shows water showering down from the light sockets as airport workers try to assess the situation.
"We had recently expanded the canopy and it was an initial teething problem. I was present there and it was immediately attended to," PK Tailong, the manager of the Lokpriya Gopinath told news agency PTI.
Passengers claimed they were drenched by the rain water and many of them had to move away with their luggage. An airport official said that no equipment, including the luggage screening machines, were affected because of the entry of water.
Many people ranted on Twitter, tagging Civil Aviation Minister Jayant Sinha and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"All the scheduled flights operated as usual last night," Mr Tailong said.
