A 14-year-old girl was abducted and molested by two men in a car when she was returning home after school on foot in Hyderabad's Hayathnagar area on Tuesday evening.
The girl was forcibly pulled into a Swift Dzire car by the two accused, police said.
A senior citizen, Jagdishwar Goud, who noticed this and some teachers too immediately tried to rescue the girl and alerted the police.
Police chased down the car, rescued the teenager and caught the men, one of whom is a car driver. Both the accused were drunk, police said.
Cases of abduction and sexual assault have been filed against the accused.
Hayathnagar police inspector Narender Goud said the vigilance and quick reaction of citizens and the police prevented an untoward incident.
Balala Hakkula Sangam, a child rights organisation, condemned the incident and pointed out that safety of girls and women is being threatened more and more.
Activist Achyuta Rao said the guilty should not be allowed to get away and should get severest punishment so there is fear of law.
There have been reports of women being abused, molested from several parts of the country since New Year's eve. In Bengaluru, hundreds of revellers had gathered to celebrate the New Year when men, some of them drunk, groped, harassed and stalked women. The police was either unable to or unwilling to help, said some of the women who were attacked. They have also said that nobody came to their defence.
