After Panic Call to PM Modi, Centre Sends Two Special Teams to Hyderabad to Tackle Swine Flu

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao today admitted that the sudden spike in number of swine flu cases and deaths had worried him.

Hyderabad: From no worry and no panic to action on a war-footing. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao admits the sudden spike in number of swine flu cases and deaths had really worried him. That was the reason he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought the Centre's help in controlling the situation. A total of 19 people have died of swine flu in just the past two months, including a 26-year-old woman on Wednesday morning, said Mr Rao.

"I was worried and really panicky, that is why I called the Prime Minister this morning. I thought this is expanding exponentially," the Chief Minister said. He admitted that more vigilant action in the last few days could have helped avoid this situation.

Two special medical teams have been sent by the Centre, along with 50,000 doses of vaccine, as a response to the Telangana Chief Minister's SOS call to Mr Modi.

Mr Rao followed up his call to the the Prime Minister, by holding review meetings with health officials, corporate hospitals and a special cabinet meeting.

After that, he admitted that there had not an integrated approach to the growing crisis and little effort to share information with the media. He also said health officials had failed to adequately cover the community in efforts to contain the virus, by ensuring those exposed to the virus are tracked.

The Chief Minister said after his meetings that he was convinced that there is no reason to panic, and that officers were being deployed to every zone and district to ensure all standard protocols and precautions are taken.
