Hyderabad: Nearly 50 police teams in Andhra Pradesh- that's about 400 cops -are searching for a man who has been dubbed "injection psycho" in the local media, an exaggeration that's creating panic, according to officials.
The media has reported that between August 22 and 26, the motorcyclist attacked 13 women in West Godavari district, piercing them, usually in the arm, with a needle, before racing away on a dark-coloured bike. But the police says two women were jabbed with a needle, the other 11 were molested by the man who is described as well-built.
"One or two needles were also recovered. They were sent for medical and forensic examination. No poison, drugs or bacteria virus were found. There is no need for women to panic," said District Superintendent of Police Bhaskar Bhushan.
The police has released a sketch of the motorcyclist based on the description of witnesses and victims, and announced a reward of Rs.1 lakh to anyone giving information leading to his arrest. CCTV footage is also being scanned from various intersections and main roads.
In the first few days, the attacker is said to have operated without using a mask. Later, he covered his face with a handkerchief. "We are doing a virtual enumeration, detailed and exhaustive,'' the police said, urging the public to remain calm.
