Hyderabad: An investigation has been ordered against two policemen, who allegedly failed to take action in the alleged gang rape of a 13-year-old girl in Hyderabad, who subsequently committed suicide.
On October 15, the teen had told her parents that a neighbour, Mallesh who is in his 20s, and his friends raped her multiple times in his room. Shortly after the incident, the girl returned to her hometown in Nagarkurnool, 125 km from Hyderabad. Three days later, she set herself on fire after dousing her clothes in kerosene.
The family alleged that the Hyderabad police had refused to take the matter seriously. Child right activists reportedly told the media that the Meerpet Police did not accept a complaint made by her adopted parents after her death.
Tasfeer Iqubal, a senior officer of the local police, who is investigating the Meerpet and the Nagarkurnool police, told NDTV that the family had submitted a "requisition" to the Nagarkurnool magistrate with the statements made by the girl before she died. Her dying declaration was recorded by the magistrate and handed over to the police.
"So far, it's come to my notice that the family did not get in touch with the police, even after the death. A dying declaration was released by the magistrate," he said.
The girl's mother said she was denied a meeting with the senior officers at the Meerpet Police Station.
