Hyderabad: A nursery student in Hyderabad was beaten up allegedly on Thursday by his teacher who has been arrested by police. The child has severe bruises on his body and was taken for medical examination.

It was the boy's grandfather who approached the police on Thursday and complained about the incident.

Hyderabad police said the teacher, from a school in Tarnaka area, has been charged for voluntarily causing hurt and also under the Juvenile Justice Act."I don't know why he was beaten up. I asked the school but not get a proper answer. So I came to the police station," said the boy's grandfather.

Several cases of alleged corporal punishment have been reported from schools in Telangana in the last few months. Earlier this month, a 16-year-old girl allegedly tried to commit suicide after being scolded by a teacher at a government residential school in Palamakula, about 105 km from Hyderabad.

In September, a video showed an 11-year-old Hyderabad girl describing how she was sent to the boys' loo by teachers as punishment for not turning up in school uniform.
