Hyderabad: Registration of cabs compulsory, says police

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police in Hyderabad today issued a notification for compulsory registration of cabs operating under its limits.

A large number of cabs operate in Cyberabad in an unsafe manner without adequate documents and unlicensed drivers, Cyberabad Police Commissioner C V Anand said.

"It is also found that drivers of these contract carriages misbehave with passengers, charge undue fees and also aid unlawful activities," he said.

Many of these vehicles affect road safety and security by parking in dangerous places, driving rashly and creating other forms of nuisance, Anand said, adding that the notification would ensure that cabs operate in an orderly manner and don't compromise public and road safety.

The notification directs owners and drivers of all cabs, taxis, vehicles on hire (estimated to be around 20,000) to register their vehicles, by submitting necessary documents to the Cyberabad traffic police.

A sticker valid for one year would be issued, which would have to be stuck on the front and rear windscreens. Cab drivers would also need to carry Quick Response (QR)-coded cards and displays issued by traffic authorities which should be visible to passengers, the notification said.

The application process for registration would begin from March 1 and these rules would come into force from May 1, the CP said, warning that violators would be liable for action under relevant sections of the Cyberabad Police Act, Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Cyberabad DCP (Traffic) Avinash Mohanty said that a cellular phone application would be launched soon which would enable passengers to know all details about vehicles and drivers of cabs they board.
Plans are afoot to extend these rules to all autorickshaws in the future, he said.
