Child rights activists have questioned the accountability of school authorities.
A watchman of a private school in Hyderabad has been arrested on charges of allegedly sexually assaulting a fifth standard student.
The police booked a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) after the parents approached them, and are now examining CCTV footage from the school.
Child rights activist Achyut Rao has questioned the accountability of the school management to ensure safety.
"How long was the watchman working at the school? Does he have any previous history of abuse? Was he screened for any past record? They (school) should answer these questions," he said.
After rapes were reported in Bengaluru schools last year, there was a campaign to make schools safe in Hyderabad as well. But was the screening staff who are in contact with children part of the protocol?
The school management was not available for comment.
