Hyderabad: Hyderabad: Opposition parties of Andhra Pradesh have decided to stage a dharna in New Delhi on January 9 to protest against the Krishna River Water Disputes Tribunal's award on sharing of river water between AP, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
At a meeting of opposition parties TDP, CPI, CPM, Lok Satta and others at the NTR Bhavan, a resolution was adopted to denounce the permission granted to Karnataka for increasing the height of the Alamatti dam from 519 meters to 524.25 metres.
The parties have decided to launch a signature campaign against the Tribunal's award. Speaking at the meeting, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu recalled that he had warned injustice would be done to AP in sharing of Krishna water as the Congress government could not effectively argue its case before the Tribunal.
"The state suffered injustice whenever the Congress was in power. The government failed to ensure proportionate allocation of Krishna water and the state's sole right over utilization of surplus waters was also lost," Chandrababu pointed out.
He also lashed out at the government for failing to complete even one major irrigation project under the controversial Jalayagnam programme.
"More than Rs 60,000 crore of public money has gone down the drain as the Jalayagnam programme was stuck in corruption. The Congress government dug canals without constructing the dams and thereby swindled thousands of crores of rupees," the Leader of Opposition said.
