An engineering college in Hyderabad witnessed massive protests on Monday after a student committed suicide over the weekend as he was refused promotion on account of low attendance.
Dinesh Reddy, 18, was a second year student of the CVSR College of Engineering in Ghatkesar. The college is affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University or JNTU and does not promote students who have less than 65 per cent attendance. The student had an attendance of 40 per cent.
On Saturday, as the college premises was rather quiet, a final year student and a lab assistant saw Dinesh jump off the fifth floor of the college building. He died in the hospital the same day.
The police say Dinesh was suffering from depression and a mental disorder. He was under treatment at Hyderabad's Kamineni Hospital.
The Dean of Examinations of the Anurag Group of Institutions - which runs the college - Professor Muthu Reddy, said Dinesh's death came as a shock to them.
"As a rule, our college conducts parent-teacher meets on a monthly basis to update the family on the student's progress. It's very unfortunate that this happened in our college."
Local police inspector B Prakash said, "We have registered a case against the institution and its head for abetment of suicide. We are still investigating."
The students of the college held a protest on Monday, claiming they would continue the protest till they get justice.
A leader of TNSF (Telugu Nadu Students' Federation), Sandeep Netha, who joined the students in protest, said, "Action should be taken against the concerned Head of the Department. If in the investigation reports he is found guilty, then he must be sacked."
An internal committee was formed today which includes Dinesh's family and friends and members of the faculty. The committee, led by the Principal, will investigate the internal issues which might have affected Dinesh.
