Rodents Chew On Woman's Body At Hyderabad Hospital Morgue

Osmania General Hospital has told the morgue staff to find out how the rodents entered the freezer

Hyderabad: The body of a 21-year-old woman who had hanged herself was found with bite marks of rodents at a morgue in the state-run Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad, her family members said. The woman, a resident of Habeeb Nagar in the city, committed suicide on Monday, and her body was taken to the mortuary on Monday night itself, police officer P Gnanendar Reddy said.

On Tuesday, the woman's family members went to the mortuary, only to find her body with bite marks of rodents, after which the horrified family complained to the hospital authorities, news agency PTI reported.

The body was supposed to be kept inside a secure freezer where rodents could not enter, the family said.

A hospital official said the people who are in charge of the mortuary have been asked to explain how the woman's body came to be mutilated in the "modern" mortuary. "We have to know the cause... how it happened," Director of Medical Education Dr K Ramesh Reddy said.

He said rodents seemed to have bitten the woman's nose and other parts of the body. "It is a modern mortuary... we have asked the officials concerned to verify how the incident happened as the body was kept in a freezer," he said.

Though the family has complained to the hospital, they have not filed a complaint with the police, inspector P Gnanendar Reddy said.

The hospital authorities have told the staff in the mortuary to ensure that all the freezer compartments are properly sealed and the mortuary is kept clean to prevent rodent infestation.
