Hyderabad: Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula's mother, Radhika, was hospitalised late on Sunday after she
complained of chest pain.
Radhika has been demanding an inquiry into the suicide of her son last Sunday after he was punished by the University allegedly for attacking an activist of a rival union.
Rebuffing a Rs 8 lakh compensation offered by the university, she said, "I want to know why he died. Was he killed or did he die? Why was he suspended? Those responsible should be arrested and punished. That's the only thing I want."
Rohith, a 26-year-old PhD scholar, had hanged himself last Sunday after living 13 days in what students had dubbed 'velivada' or an ostracised area meant for Dalits.
This after Rohith and his four friends were expelled from their college hostel and administrative block, and disallowed from participating in student activities. They were however allowed to attend classes and access the library.
Students protesting the university's action allege that it were letters from union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and the Union Education Ministry led that compelled it to punish the five students.
