"I am an Uttar Pradesh-wala, a parliamentarian from UP," said the Prime Minister, who represents Varanasi in the state. The big crowd chanted "Modi, Modi," many of them climbing poles to get a better glimpse of the PM much to the alarm of the police.
The Prime Minister detailed in his speech the flagship schemes and policies of his government, focusing on the benefits they have brought for the poor, who, he said his government was dedicated to working for.
"Two years ago, we were taking oath at this time. I have chosen that moment to come and give an account of our work," the Prime Minister said, adding, "In my first speech I had said my government is dedicated to the poor of the country."
He attacked the previous Congress-led UPA government over the many scams that surfaced in its tenure and said, "Two years ago, corruption and loot were all over the news. Were those people in power sent to loot the public? Don't know where the last government spent its money."
His work, the Prime Minister said, was minutely scrutinised. "If my government does something wrong, it runs on TV for 24 hours. I welcome this close scrutiny of my work. The government should be held accountable for every day, every penny."
The BJP said about two lakh people attended Thursday's rally, the first in a series that the Prime Minister will address.
The Prime Minister will visit Shillong today, Dhavalgiri in Karnataka on May 29, Balasore, Odisha, on June 2, and also Rajasthan. Senior ministers will also fan out across the country from today and address public meetings. 33 teams will hold such interactions in 198 cities till June 15.
The highlight of the celebrations will be a five-hour show telecast live by public broadcaster Doordarshan from Delhi's India Gate called <i>Ek nayi subah</i> or a new morning to showcase the government's work in the last two years and discuss the road ahead.
The Delhi show will feature, apart from a number of other Bollywood stars like Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor and Prasoon Joshi, panel discussions on six focus areas of the government.
Top ministers will participate in the discussions related to their departments - like Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the discussion on the economy. PM Modi will attend the finale.
