Don't put 'the city that never sleeps' to sleep again - an impassioned appeal by Mumbai's municipal corporation after the metropolis reported a steep 70 per cent rise in daily coronavirus cases on Tuesday.
The city reported 1,377 new COVID-19 cases, sharply up from 809 infections reported a day ago, and one more death, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
With Tuesday's cases, Mumbai's coronavirus tally rose to 7,73,298, while the death count increased to 16,374, the civic body said in a bulletin.
It also revealed that the case doubling time has sharply dropped to 841 days, while Mumbai's coronavirus recovery rate stood at 97 per cent.
The growth rate of COVID-19 cases between December 21 and 27 was 0.07 per cent in the city, the bulletin said.
Maharashtra, meanwhile, reported 2,172 new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, the state health department said on Tuesday.
However, no new cases of Omicron variant of the virus were reported in the state during the last 24 hours. There are currently a total of 167 Omicron cases in the state.
With this, the total COVID-19 case count in the state has gone up to 66,61,486.
22 people lost their lives to the deadly virus in the state, taking the total tally of deaths in the state due to COVID-19 to 1,41,476. The case fatality rate in the state is 2.12 per cent.
There are currently 11,492 active COVID-19 cases in the state.
