New Delhi: Reflecting a strong enthusiasm among voters in Delhi assembly poll, an estimated 1.7 lakh people were in the queue after the deadline for voting ended at 5pm, following which the Election Commission decided to continue voting even if it goes on till late in the evening.

The Election Commission said polling drew to a close at Okhla constituency at around 9.30 PM.

"1.72 lakh voters were in queue by 5 PM. So, we decided to allow all those who were in queue to vote even if it goes till late in the evening," an Election Commission Official said.

Delhi recorded the highest turnout of around 66 per cent and the official said it may go up further as they were still compiling the data.

So far, Delhi's highest voter turnout has been 61.75 per cent recorded in 1993 assembly election.

In 2003 and 2008 assembly polls, 53.42 per cent and 57.58 per cent polling were recorded respectively.

A total of 1.19 crore voters were eligible to vote, out of which around 80 lakh exercised their franchise.

Election Commission officials said the voting percentage in nine assembly constituencies in South Delhi grew by 11 per cent compared to polls in 2008.

In nine constituencies in East Delhi, the polling percentage witnessed a 7.9 per cent jump.

There were a total of 11,993 polling stations, out of which 630 were declared critical and hyper critical.

Over 32,000 personnel of Delhi police, 11,000 home guards and 107 companies of central paramilitary forces (100 personnel per company) were deployed to conduct peaceful election.

Besides, all flying squads, static surveillance teams and video surveillance teams were active in all the districts.

In all critical polling stations, there was deployment of Central Paramilitary force and police personnel. Besides them, there were micro observers to keep a tab on the proceedings inside the polling stations.

For the first time, live streaming of voting percentage of New Delhi constituency was done on Delhi's Election Commission's website. However, registering 2000 hits per minute, the webpage crashed at around 2.30pm.

CCTV cameras were mounted on several critical stations.

Moreover, live webcasting of proceedings inside 196 critical polling booths were also carried out.

In a bid to boost voter turnout, nine 'model' polling stations with spruced-up infrastructure were set up for the first time.

Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system, under which a voter can verify his voting details, was also used for the first in Delhi Election. The system was in place in New Delhi constituency.
