1 Killed In Firing After Mob Attacks Official In Kashmir

Srinagar: One person was killed and three others injured after security personnel opened fire at protesters at Lethpora in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Tuesday evening.

Police sources say a Personal Security Officer (PSO) of the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramban opened fire when a crowd pelted stones on the vehicle they were travelling in.

One protester was killed on the spot and the condition of another is stated to be very critical.

"The injured have been shifted to hospital where condition of one is very critical," said a senior police officer.

He said the incident took place when a crowd marching on Srinagar-Jammu highway intercepted the vehicle of ADC Ramban near Lethpora at 8:30 pm.

"Once the crowd saw the police guard inside the vehicle they pelted stones on the vehicle. The PSO opened fire resulting into the killing of one youth and injuries to three others," the police officer said.

A Central Reserve Police Force officer deployed in the area said after the death of the civilian the angry crowd set the vehicle on fire.

"The situation is very tense here and we are trying to control it," the officer said.

With this incident, the number of civilian deaths in firing by security forces has risen to 51 in the last four weeks of the unrest in Kashmir. Around 3000 people have been injured. A large number of people have received pellet injuries in their eyes and many of them may lose eyesight partially or permanently.
