11 arrested for ragging in Osmania Medical College

Hyderabad: There is a conspiracy of silence in Hyderabad's Osmania Medical College. There is anger directed at first year students who dared to complain about an incident of ragging on Thursday night that seniors dismiss as something they have all lived through.

Around 10 pm that night, some 26 first year students were summoned to the terrace of the hostel by a dozen students of second year as a punishment for a first year girl student refusing to copy notes for a senior.

What started as a regular ragging session degraded into something serious with some boys being asked to perform unnatural sexual acts.

The college management has suspended 12 second year students. The police has arrested 11 accused and is looking to arrest nine more.

Police inspector R Jaipal says: "Those who got low marks were abused and humiliated. They were asked to remove shirt and undergarment and act as though performing sexual act and also to dance around.''

The warden and vice-principal who conducted the internal inquiry and lodged the police complaint says these incidents have been going on for years and hopes at least now abuse in the name of ragging would stop.
