Srinagar:
14 militants have been killed in different counter infiltration operations as fierce gun battles have been raging between the Army and militants in North Kashmir over the last five days. A large quantity of arms and ammunition has also been recovered, the Army has told NDTV.
Giving details about the operations, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh, General Officer Commanding 15 corps, told NDTV that a group of militants had infiltrated recently.
"There have been five major operations. Three have been on the Line of Control (LoC) and two have been in the hinterland. At the LoC, we had an operation which was carried out in the Machil area in which four terrorists were killed. They were from the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group and six weapons were recovered from that operation," Lieutenant General Singh said.
"In Keran sector in Kupwara and in Tanghdar sector there were two infiltration attempts and both were foiled. In Keran sector one terrorist was killed and his body was recovered. We had recovered two AK-47s and it was also learnt that one of the terrorists had gone across and was immediately killed after crossing the LoC," he added.
Last month, the Army had said that Pakistan-based militant groups had intensified infiltration attempts along the border and at least 250 to 300 militants were waiting on the other side of the LoC, ready to cross over into India.
