15 Days on, Gas Leakage Continues in Jaisalmer, Well Likely To Be Shut

The highly inflammable gas started to leak from the well in Dandewala area about a fortnight ago.

Jaisalmer: A major gas leakage continues 15 days after it started from an Oil India Ltd (OIL) well at Dandewala area in Jaisalmer and the well might be "killed", OIL's Project Head NR Deka said on Saturday.

Though team has been working to stop the leakage from the well located near the India-Pakistan international border, but has not managed to completely control it, Mr Deka said.

"If its emission does not stop fully, we will "kill" the well so that there would be no chance for its revival," he said, adding its closure would not affect any supply.

About 9,000 cubic metre gas was being produced from other sources in Jaisalmer area, and it was being supplied to Ramgarh Thermal Power Plant, he said.

There are two options, if gas in this troubled area was less, then an open fire be allowed, and in second option, a cemented chemical be applied to seal this opening of gas leak, he said.

Jaisalmer district administration was also monitoring the emission which was said to be out of danger to people living in far flung areas, Collector Vishwamohan Sharma said.

Highly inflammable gas gushing out from the well through pipes was controlled partially as its speed is lowered down with the help of new mechanism and pipes late last week, but it was not completely stopped so far.
