Villagers injured in firing by Pakistan along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu:
Pakistani soldiers attacked 16 places along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir overnight, in the latest round of ceasefire violations by the neighbouring country.
Sources in the Border Security Force or BSF say firing continued till Friday morning in the Arnia and Ramgarh areas along the border.
"I was sitting at the veranda with my three children when suddenly a bomb landed and we were all injured. The firing last night was massive...we are scared...we want to migrate to a safer place," said Ratno Devi, whose village was caught in the line of fire.
On Thursday afternoon, eight people were injured in shelling from Pakistan in the Akhnoor sector, among them five members from a single family.
Hours later, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on his way back from his tour of Russia and China, said he was disappointed with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and asked him to recognize that what was happening on the border is not good for the two nations.
"Let me say I am disappointed because in the New York meeting (between Dr Singh and Nawaz Sharif last month) there was a general agreement on both the sides that peace and tranquility should be maintained on the border, the Line of Control as well as the International Border and it has not happened. It has come to me as a big disappointment," the Prime Minister said.
The Defence Ministry says there have been over 200 ceasefire violations this year, more than all such incidents in the last decade.
50 frontier posts were targeted in Kashmir on Tuesday night in what the Army described as one of the worst attacks since the 2003 ceasefire agreement for the LoC or de-facto border that runs 740 km.
