The university campus saw violence last month over rumors that a group of students were cooking beef in the hostel.
Chittorgarh:
16 students and a hostel warden, all of them from Jammu and Kashmir, were suspended by Mewar Univesrity authorities yesterday. The suspensions come after two groups of students fought with each other last week over India's loss to West Indies in the T20 Cricket World cup.
University authorities say there is calm on the campus after they took action. The National Institute of Technology or NIT, Srinagar, where a similar fight over the cricket match escalated to a clash between protesting students and the police, is still tense.
The fight took place last Thursday after which the police arrested nine students from the university in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh. They were released on bail on Monday after which the university took disciplinary action against them for "creating nuisance on the campus." Of the suspended students, nine are from Kashmir and the remaining seven from Jammu. They have been asked to report back at the campus with their parents. University authorities said the suspended students were counseled before being asked to leave the campus.
The university campus had seen tension last month when a rumour over a group of students cooking beef ended in violence. The police had arrested four students but later found the meat they were cooking was not beef. It had said the arrests were made to protect the students from violence.
Mewar University PRO Harish Gurnani told NDTV "We have tried to make these students understand why they come here and if they get involved in such type of activities it will be detrimental to their careers."
