17-hour encounter near Srinagar with terrorists

Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir: After an encounter that lasted 17 hours, one militant was killed on Tuesday morning but another managed to escape in the Pulwama district of South Kashmir.

The two militants were hiding in a house in a village 60 kilometres from Srinagar. On Monday, the police, assisted by the army, cordoned off the area. The encounter was suspended last night but was resumed on Tuesday morning.

This is the second encounter in the area in a week. Two LeT terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed by security forces in Pulwama on Saturday.

Defence Minister AK Antony visits Jammu on Tuesday for a review of the security situation in the state. He is accompanied by the Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor.

Last week, Srinagar saw its worst terrorist attack in three years. Two terrorists stormed Law Chowk in the heart of the city and fought security personnel forces for 22 hours from the top floor of a hotel. Both terrorists were killed; two civilians also died in that encounter and nine others were injured.
