Seventeen more people have tested positive for coronavirus at a building in northwest Delhi, where 41 people tested positive earlier. The total number of positive people in the building is now 59. The police said some test results are yet to come.
With the huge delay in results, a second round of tests was conducted today. Around a 100 samples were collected, sources said, and sent to a private laboratory. The results are yet to come.
The initial group of residents who tested positive is believed to have contracted the virus from a patient who tested positive on April 18. The area was sealed the next day and 175 residents were tested on April 20 and 21.
But the first round of results came yesterday, the second lot came in today and some more are yet to come. With most coronavirus cases are expected to be cured within 14 days, questions were raised in this case about the efficacy of the tests in isolation of patients and containment of the disease.
There was concern that more people could have contracted the disease in the building and the area -- a congested locality close to Delhi-Gurgaon border.
Delhi has 97 containment zones. All its 11 districts have been categorised as "Red Zone", or area with more than 10 cases of coronavirus. Three containment zones have been declared as coronavirus-free areas.
Last week, the Delhi government upped its surveillance measures as the number of coronavirus patients in the national capital crossed 3,500. The multiple screenings -- thrice in 14 days in any affected area -- were introduced as part of the new measures.
The government said not only would this help detect fresh cases in time, it would also help break down the capital's huge containment zones in smaller units and help control movement within it.
So far, Delhi has seen 4,122 cases of coronavirus, of whom 1256 patients have recovered, 64 have died.
