Mumbai recorded 2,479 new COVID-19 cases - a 50 percent rise from 1,648 the previous day - and one death due to the infection in the last 24 hours. The city crossed the 2,000-mark after three days.
Mumbai has been reporting Covid cases in four digits since June 7.
Maharashtra is among the states witnessing an upsurge in Covid cases after witnessing a lull for months. The state reported 5218 new cases today with its capital city accounting for nearly half of it.
Ten states -- Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Gujarat -- have over 1,000 active cases.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level review meeting with a team of experts over increasing cases of COVID-19 in the country. He stressed on the need to focus on districts reporting high case positivity and undertake adequate testing and effective surveillance to assess and control the spread of infection in a timely manner.
Mr Mandaviya directed the officials to continue to focus on surveillance and on Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) to scan for any possible mutation. He also directed for monitoring hospitalizations due to the highly-contagious infection.
India reported a surge in infections today with 13,313 new cases, and 38 deaths in a span of 24 hours, pushing the country's overall Covid numbers to 4,33,44,958 cases and 5,24,941 deaths.
