3 Children Killed, Many Injured in Bihar School Van Accident, Protests at Hospital

Violent protests at a hospital in Siwan over lack of doctors to treat schoolchildren injured in an accident

Siwan: There has been violence and arson at a hospital in Bihar's Siwan district, after the death of three schoolchildren and a teacher after a van taking them to school rammed another vehicle early this morning.

At least a dozen students of a private school and coaching institute were in the van when the accident took place on the outskirts of the town.

When the children, some of them severely injured, were brought to the district hospital, relatives alleged that there weren't enough doctors and the children did not receive prompt medical attention.

An angry mob set fire to at least six vehicles at the hospital, including an ambulance. Parts of the hospital were also vandalised. Hospital authorities say the operation theatre has been damaged.

A senior police officer in Siwan has said they are trying to control the situation and additional forces have been sent to the hospital. The officer said the number of children killed in the accident could rise.
