Hooghly, West Bengal: Two civic police volunteers were on Saturday arrested for allegedly beating up a CPM supporter who was "returning" after attending Left Front Chairman Biman Bose's rally last evening at Tarakeswar in West Bengal's Hooghly district.

After receiving complaint against the two civic police volunteers, Bindu Bag and Sanjib Sana, they were arrested, police said.

Subrata Bag, the 32-year-old CPM supporter, alleged that the had stopped him when he was returning from Biman Bose's meeting and asked him why he attended it. "They beat me up with bamboo sticks and iron rods. My legs were fractured," he claimed.

CPM district secretary Sudarshan Ray Chowdhuri thanked the Election Commission for the arrest.

He claimed that the police did not receive complaint of the party in places like Bhadreshwar, Haripal, Khanakul, Goghat, Pursurah and Panduah during the past few months. The police authorities either refused or misbehaved."

IPS officer turned Trinamool Congress candidate Rachpal Singh said no worker of his party was involved in the incident and it was an internal matter of the village.
