Here's the story in 10 key points:
There have been been two murders raising questions over law and order in Karnataka. While BJP leader Praveen Nettaru, 32, was killed on July 26 in Dakshina Kannada district, a man named Fazil, 23, was stabbed to death by masked attackers in Mangaluru yesterday evening. Of these, Netteru's murder case will go to the NIA, as per the announcement so far.
In connection with Nettaru's murder in Bellare near Sullia town, two local men have been arrested. Investigation is on to catch those who attacked Fazil. So far, there is no information about any direct connection between the cases.
Nettaru's murder sparked protests as BJP workers said Chief Minister Bommai was unable to protect his own people. There were strong reactions from right-wing organisations, too, otherwise seen as pro-BJP. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad called for a bandh in the area.
Some right-wing outfits alleged that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India are behind Nettaru's murder. Police have also said the two arrested men may have links with the PFI, but further probe is on.
As the state government faces questions from within the party, minister Ashwath Narayan CN threatened to go "five steps ahead of UP" and carry out "encounters". "It's the wish of our workers and people that such incidents shouldn't happen. According to their wish there will be action, culprits will be nabbed, and ready to encounter... We will give better model than UP. Karnataka is a progressive state and model state, we don't need to follow anyone."
The minister's statement came a day after CM Bommai said the "Yogi model" that exists in UP will come into force in Karnataka too. He had not shared details of what he meant by the model of UP CM Yogi Adityanath .
As for Fazil's murder, the savage attack was caught on a CCTV camera on the street. The attackers, who had covered their faces with black clothes, repeatedly hit Fazil with a stick and then stabbed him. Even after he collapsed and a mannequin fell on him, one of the men continued to hit him.
Hundreds of people took part in the funeral procession of Fazil today. Karnataka Chief Minister said his government was not treating the case as an ordinary murder. The state government is going into the motive. "For us, the life of every person is important. We treat everyone equally," he said.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Mangaluru till July 30 morning. No one will be allowed to roam in the city after 10 pm, said Shashi Kumar, the local police chief.
Leader of Opposition in the assembly, Congress's Siddaramaiah has demanded the resignation of Mr Bommai, saying law and order in the state has "completely collapsed". The killings in the state show "intelligence failure", the former chief minister said.
