Imphal: Militants ambushed a team of Manipur Police personnel on road patrol duty in two different areas in the state's Chandel district, killing four personnel and injuring four others.
The police said that the first incident occurred at Lokchao, located around 21 km from the border town of Moreh, along the Imphal-Moreh route. One policeman died on the spot, while the others were injured.
The ambush took place when the team was heading to Tengnoupal where Chief Minister Okram Ibobi was scheduled to inaugurate the newly created district of Tengnoupal, carved out from the existing Naga-dominated district of Chandel.
While one personnel was killed on spot, three of those injured later succumbed to injuries, said a police officer. Of the deceased personnel, two have been identified as Md Ayub Khan and Hc Ngarei Marring, the police officer said.
The second ambush took place at Bongyang area in the same district. In the attack one person of the state forces was also severely injured. The attack took place at around 8:30 pm.
The injured policemen have been taken to Imphal for further medical treatment, the police officer said.
