Shillong: Two policemen were today shot dead in a remote village in the East Garo Hills District after a group of suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants laid an ambush and allegedly opened fire at them, police said.
The incident took place at around 3 PM when the militants allegedly ambushed and opened fire at the two police personnel who were coming from market on a two-wheeler, a senior police officer said.
The deceased have been identified as Helping Stone Nongkseh and Kanton Dalu, both constables of the 6th MLP Battalion deployed for counter insurgency operations in East Garo Hills District, the officer said.
While Nongkseh was from a village in Ri Bhoi District, Dalu was from the Garo Hills.
A search operation has been launched to nab those involved in the shootout, the officer added.
