Police personnel have been deployed in Ghatampur, which remains tense.
Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh:
A 20-year-old man was killed in communal clashes in Uttar Pradesh's Ghatampur, 60 kilometres from Kanpur, on Sunday.
The clashes were reportedly a fall-out of the incidents of yesterday evening, when two young Hindu boys were beaten up by a few Muslim men on charges of theft, and handed over to the police. On finding no evidence of theft, the two boys had been let off by the police.
The situation took a violent turn today, when some members of the Hindu community gathered to protest the incident. Both groups pelted stones and burnt down some shops. A police post too was set on fire.
A 20-year old Muslim boy was killed in the violence and three others were injured.
Police personnel have been deployed in the area, which remains tense, but the situation has been brought under control for the moment.
The Samajwadi Party government has faced heavy criticism on the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and repeated incidents of communal violence.
