According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 2009 was the warmest year since 1901.
The temperature was about 0.913 degrees Celsius higher than the average for 1961-1990.
The annual average temperature for India is 24.64 degrees Celsius.
The IMD in its statement does not attribute this to climate change, but has only provided the evidence for this increase in temperature.
India suffered a bad drought last year, and IMD's forecast was off the mark in 2009.
