It's a big day for J Jayalalitha and Mamata Banerjee - both keep their states. Assembly election results for West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry today.
I will be grateful to Mr Arun Jaitley if he restores the special status of Assam: Tarun Gogoi to NDTV.
I will not go on a holiday. I enjoy fighting for the people of Assam. I will go on fighting whenever I see any injustice: Tarun Gogoi.

Honestly I do not know who our main Opposition today is. You cannot have a regional party anchoring a national alliance. That has had disastrous results in the past. I think the situation is very hazy, it is up to the Congress to put its house in order: Arun Jaitley to NDTV
Himanta was with me during Lok Sabha elections but we still lost. So he was not the only factor this time. Senior BJP leaders visited our state 200 times in last 2 years. We perhaps had some deficiencies: Congress' Tarun Gogoi (right)

I think if you look at the growth of the BJP from North India to the West. One important milestone was 2008, winning Karnataka. Next we wanted to start making the Kerala elections tripolar. In Assam, our electoral policy worked and made a difference: BJP's Arun Jaitley (left)

No, I did not give up. I fought like a lion, I tried by best, yes I failed but that's the verdict of the people of Assam: Tarun Gogoi on defeat in Assam.
360 Degree View Of NDTV's Studios During Election Results Analysis
Mamata Banerjee's top aide Derek O'Brien praises NDTV for showcasing Kolkata so beautifully on the show from the banks of Hoogly river and a beautifully lit Howrah bridge in the background. Was very proud to see my city like that.
I'll promise you one thing. When you are a team led by a captain (Mamata Banerjee) who is used to victories. You will be gracious in your victory: Derek O'Brien.
We are not shocked with the results, some others may be. We prefer to underplay. It's a little early to talk about a federal front. But people called from all over to wish Mamata di: Trinamool's Derek O'Brien to NDTV.
People seem to have the Amma brand. We call them freebies, they call them welfare schemes. AIADMK has such committed cadres, they are almost walk-talking advertisements: Uma Sudhir.

The BJP does have RSS behind them. They are the real ideological bosses: Arati R Jerath.
BJP is encompassing all. We don't discriminate. Live and let live is the BJP's ethos. We believe in positive secularism: BJP's Prakash Javadekar.

The results have been disappointing but not unexpected. We have been in Assam for 3 terms, people were looking for an alternative, they accepted BJP. In Kerala, there was a cyclical term. In Bengal, we tried an experiment that did not work. We don't need to throw the baby with the bathwater: Congress' Manish Tewari to NDTV.
My problem is that BJP does not understand the culture of Bengal. In Bengal there is a synthesis of culture, religion, which the BJP does not understand.Their own party's president said some insulting things about girl students: Amit Mitra to NDTV
Prannoy Roy: Are we gonna see Mamata Banerjee as PM one day?

Amit Mitra: Mamata Banerjee has never said she wants to be PM, she is very humble but she can have a serious role if such a matrix does evolve.
The CPM is a declining number so they are not an opponent. Congress did get some votes but mainly from Left supporters. The BJP, with a declining vote share, is not a factor. We will oppose issues which are not good for the country tooth and nail: Amit Mitra
We have built the foundation of social and physical infrastructure in step one: Trinamool's Amit Mitra. (Amit Mitra retained the Khardaha seat in North 24 Parganas district wining by a margin of 21,200 votes)

Prannoy Roy: What now?

Himanta Biswa Sarma: Getting Bangladeshis on a train and deporting them is not something we can do. But at least we can delist them, take them off voting lists. We can give constitutional safeguards to the indigenous population.

We have to be secular because PM has said SSSV.  But I am against Bangladeshi infiltration. All indigenous Hindu, Muslim, Bodos has supported our stand. BJP has not fought the election on religious basis: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Prannoy Roy: Did you desert a sinking ship by leaving the Congress?

Himanta Biswa Sarma: I will not describe the Congress as a sinking ship or solid ship. But I did not leave the Congress with joy, I tried my best and then left with a heavy heart.

The people of Assam have given a massive mandate. We won because of PM Modi and blessings of people of Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Assam election results.

For Amma it has been a validation of what she has done over the last five years. I think Jayalalithaa's inaccessibility is a little overblown by the media. She is there in every welfare scheme: K Pandiarajan, AIADMK

On Jayalalithaa's Big Win
Clearly Amma's performance and Amma's promises helped us win. The freebies as they are called, they are all welfare directed. This was the single most important reason for the victory: K Pandiarajan
Where has Mr Modi come from? He worked as a local leader, led a state, kept winning the state and then was projected as the PM. So he deserves the national perspective: Nalin Kohli

The agenda of governance is derived by what the PM has said which is Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas: Nalin Kohli
If we have made a mistake, today we have shown, that we have done introspection, made amends and projected local leaders: Babul Supriyo
He (Shashi Tharoor) often makes some very pertinent points and gets scolded by the Congress because he makes logical statements. The country has rejected Congress as party which is mindless: Babul Supriyo

In Assam there was definitely the 15-year anti-incumbency and a few mistakes in good faith. I knew the alliance in Bengal was not going to work. As for Kerala it was a genuine surprise because there was five years of development: Shashi Tharoor

(What needs to be done now?)
The Congress has been an asset as recent as the Bihar elections, keeping together the Grand Alliance like glue: Shashi Tharoor
I think we won because of Mamata Banerjee's development work. Their alliance was never going to work. Zero plus zero is still zero. People still remember beaten up by the Left, says Mahua Maitra, TMC candidate who won.
A lot of people in the Trinamool did not expect such a huge victory. There has been a swing in Mamata Banerjee's favour, it has been a positive vote for her: Monideepa Banerjie
In Kerala BJP had a swing of 9%, in Bengal they went up to 11% of the vote share. This is significant: Prannoy Roy
The Congress has to admit it has a problem, but in statements so far they are not willing to do so. They are making up excuses for their losses: Siddharth Varadarajan

Jayalalithaa is now so vulnerable. She is a transactional politician: Shekhar Gupta
This election was just another building block for the 2019 election .The big elections are coming next year - UP, Punjab, Gujarat. So we shouldn't draw any conclusions right now but you can see the trends: Arati R Jerath, Political commentator.

Someone said to me, the Congress party does not stand a chance. He said they were living in denial. And De Nile is not just a river in Egypt.
Prannoy Roy's Live Analysis of Election Results 2016

Are these victories just what the BJP needed after setbacks in Bihar and Delhi? Is this the end of the Congress: Prannoy Roy
ICYMI, this:

Welcomed by a shower of rose petals

At BJP HQ, PM Modi was greeted with a traditional Assamese hat and a gamucha, the distinctive red and white woven scarf

We will relentlessly keep working for the aspirations of the common man. I want to congratulate Amit Shah, Assam leadership and their team: PM Modi

The election has made it clear that changes BJP is bringing to the lives of common people are being accepted and supported. BJP is fast gaining acceptance across the country, this is great for democracy: PM Modi at BJP HQ
For many, the BJP forming a government in Assam is as surprising as the BJP being part of the government in Jammu & Kashmir: PM Modi

I want to thank the voters of the five states with all my heart. They have shown their faith in the BJP: PM Modi
PM Modi arrives at BJP HQ, addresses party workers

Waiting for PM Modi

A BJP Parliamentary Board meeting is scheduled:

I think we should not talk a lot today. Our vision document is based on teamwork and participative dialogue: Assam's next chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal

From Didi's album:

It is Mamata Banerjee's hard work that paid off, she addressed 166 rallies herself: Saugata Roy to NDTV
PM Modi called us 'Terror, Maut and Corruption,' the Kolkata flyover was made an issue. We faced the most scurrilous attacks faced by any party in many years: TMC's Saugata Roy to NDTV
Assam - results for all 126 seats are out

Personally, I have learnt lessons from defeats like in Delhi. One mistake can cost you an election. If you look at our campaign, we made sure we did not make any blunders. You cannot compare Assam to Bihar or Delhi: Ram Madhav to NDTV
Congress has not learnt any lessons from the 2014 defeat. People don't want to accept them in the present shape or form. Congress has been rejected in Assam, Kerala, even in Bengal where they tried to piggyback: Ram Madhav to NDTV
Tackling infiltrators will be handled by the state and Centre together. Sealing borders will be done by the Centre. Once that is done, we have to prevent an efforts to break the fencing: Ram Madhav to NDTV
It is a stupendous victory. We want to dedicate it to Ma Kamakhya and the River Brahmaputra:
