A woman officer, Wing Commander Pooja Thakur, led the Guard of Honour for US President Barack Obama at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today.
President Obama was given a 21-gun salute at the forecourt of the majestic presidential palace, where President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top union ministers were also present.
This is the first time a woman officer has led the Guard of Honour for a major visiting dignitary at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Women officers will also play a leading role in tomorrow's Republic Day parade, in which President Obama will be the chief guest.
After inspecting the guard of honour, the American President left for Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajpath, where he will pay tribute and plant a sapling.
