officers in Kashmir said crowds resorted to heavy stone-pelting on police and security forces.
Srinagar:
At least 21 policemen and security personnel were injured in clashes with protesters in several parts of Kashmir today.
The clashes broke out soon after congregational Eid prayers in Srinagar and Anantnag. Police charged batons, fired teargas shells and resorted to firing in the air to disperse the crowds who took to throwing stones at them.
In Anantnag, large crowds shouting separatist slogans clashed with police. Nine policemen including two senior officers were injured.
Witnesses alleged the police fired teargas shells on worshippers at Eidgah grounds in the south Kashmir town.
Police sources say crowds resorted to heavy stone pelting on police and security forces and tried to damage public property.
In the Srinagar Eidgah ground, where thousands had gathered for congregational prayers, protesters fought with the police. Several people were injured.
Most of the separatist leaders who had called for protests have been put under house arrest and were not allowed to offer Eid prayers.
Today's clashes and stone pelting on the police happened a day after Jammu and Kashmir home department dropped cases against scores of people accused of participating in violent protests in Kashmir.
An official spokesman said cases against 634 people accused of the throwing stone at the security personnel were withdrawn following directions from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
