Anjali Waghmaarey, the lawyer for the 26/11 accused Ajmal Qasab has the most unpopular and difficult job. She has been threatened and her house ransacked by the Shiv Sena but she has decided to go ahead and brave all these threats.
The Shiv Sena should realize her courage and commitment to justice because, if Qasab does not have a defence lawyer he may be set free on technical grounds.
A stoic Anjali told the court on Wednesday that she will continue to be Qasab's lawyer. Her message loud and clear: She will not bow down to threatening Shiv Sainiks who on Monday night demanded she withdraw from the case.
"I reiterate again and again that I am doing it for the benefit of the country," said Anjali Waghmare, lawyer for Qasab.
The Sena insisted since her husband was a policeman she should not defend Qasab. But she disagreed saying she is professionally independent.
The police have promised her adequate security but Waghmare's only concern is public opinion going against her.
"I was shocked at the protests, and took the decision at my own risk," said Waghmare.
Defending Qasab is not a pleasant job. Legal experts say this almost an open and shut case. But someone's got to do it. It's Anjali Waghmare and all eyes will be on her on the 6th of April when the trial commences.
