26/11: Was an Indian among terrorist handlers?

New Delhi: Does an Indian handler exist in the 26/11 terror plot? On Monday, the Home Minister said he couldn't "confirm or deny" a newspaper report that an Indian connection had been established.

The question arose after the use of intrinsically Hindi words was noticed in conversations recorded by security agencies. The accent, however, is Punjabi throughout.

Handler: Let the administration know, this is just a trailer. The film is yet to play out.
Terrorist: What is a trailer?
Handler: Trailer, maane udaharan hai, chhota sa example hai.
Handler: Hukumat peeth thapthapati hai. Aur prashashan sar pe tole maarta hai.
Handler: Israel ke saath gathbandhan na kiya jaye.

The words used between Imran Babar - one of the two terrorists who laid siege to Nariman House - and his handler in Pakistan, raised suspicion.

The Hindu's report claims the voice is that of Syed Zabiuddin Syed Zakiuddin Ansari - a jihadi from Maharashtra who was first linked to the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and then the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), and was behind a plot to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The Mumbai Police say that apart from Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed - the two Indian nationals currently being tried for the 26/11 attacks - they have no evidence to suggest that other Indians were part of the conspiracy. However, in July, when Kasab confessed in court, he claimed an Indian handler Abu Jundal taught them Hindi.

He was the man the terrorist and his handler repeatedly referred to.

Handler: Jundal bhai has given you a statement. Do you have it on you?
Terrorist: No, I am burnt it in the night. But I remember it.

The former NSG chief J K Dutt had hinted at this local support: "Local support is something that the investigating agencies will definitely look into."

Now, the questions have returned to the Home Minister's door for a confirmation.
