26-year-old from Bengal who was killed in Kabul attack

26-year-old from Bengal who was killed in Kabul attack
For the Chakraborty family in West Bengal's Srinathpur village, the Taliban attack in Kabul on Tuesday spelt the end of the world. Their son, Kaushik, was among the three Indians killed there that day.

A cook by profession, he had gone to Kabul two years ago, leaving behind a pregnant wife. Kaushik had never met his son who was born soon after.

The Taliban, which has claimed responsibility for the attack, detonated explosives packed in a vehicle at the back wall of the guest house where Kaushik worked. At least two attackers entered the breached wall firing their weapons.

According to his family which has only got very sketchy details so far, 26-year-old Kaushik didn't have a chance to escape the suicide bomb attack and gunfire. He was a cook at the NATO supply company and couldn't run to the bunker for shelter in time.

His father, Sushanta, initially tried to hide the news of his death from the family. But couldn't, for long. "His colleagues informed me that Kaushik is no more," he said.

Kaushik leaves behind a young wife Deblina and a two-year-old son Ahan who has never seen his father. He will grow up with only photographs to remember him by and an unanswered question: why did the Taliban have to kill him.

There were 50 other Indians present in the compound at the time of attack; they escaped unhurt. They worked at a Dubai based company's guest house. The company's personnel who also live in the guest house supplied food, water and fuel to NATO forces in Kabul.
