New Delhi: Sanjay Chandra, the Managing Director of real estate giant Unitech could be jailed again for attempting to interfere with the investigation against him, the CBI has said in the Supreme Court. Mr Chandra is one of several people accused in the telecom scam, worth 1.76 lakh crores according to the government's auditor.  He has been charged with conspiracy and criminal misconduct for colluding with former telecom minister A Raja to land an out-of-turn license and free second-generation or 2G airwaves in 2008.

Mr Chandra spent six months in jail before he was granted bail by the Supreme Court. Mr Raja was also arrested along with executives from some of India's top telecoms.

On June 14, the CBI filed an application with the Supreme Court stating that a recent secretly-taped conversation between Mr Chandra and A K Singh, the prosecutor who was representing the CBI, proves that the businessman is violating the conditions of his bail, which would be deemed violated if any attempt is seen in influencing witnesses or anyone else involved in the case.

Mr Singh was removed as the prosecutor when a CD of the conversation was sent anonymously to the CBI office last year.

It's interesting to note that the agency has not taken any action against its Mr Singh other than removing him from the case though it concluded that the voices on the tape were genuine.

Agency officials said that while the conversation between an accused and the CBI lawyer was improper, it didn't amount to any criminal action.

NDTV tried to contact Sanjay Chandra's lawyers but they were unavailable for comment.
