Kolkata:
The CPI has backtracked on a statement it made earlier on withdrawing their demand for a JPC on 2G.
The party issued a statement a short while ago saying:
Electronic media has quoted that Gurudas Dasgupta has said that he is in favour of withdrawing the demand of JPC. He has been thoroughly misquoted. What he said was that "while not withdrawing the demand of JPC, while fighting for JPC... Parliament should be allowed to discuss... not only for JPC but also other important people's issues'
But Mr Dasgupta clearly said that they were withdrawing their demand for JPC.
"We are withdrawing our demand for JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee). But for only one demand to hold up the Parliament is wrong. Today, the most important issue is economic policy and price rise. The Parliament must meet, must discuss, Parliament hold up should not continue."
Government's chief troubleshooter Pranab Mukherjee launched a scathing attack on the Opposition on Saturday on the issue of continuing stalemate over the 2G spectrum scam.
At a rally in Siliguri in West Bengal, Pranab Mukherjee said, "If the Opposition does not have faith in Parliamentary democracy they should join the Maoists."
But today in Chennai, he softened his stand and said he hoped to find a solution soon.
"I do hope it will be possible for us to find us a solution so that transaction during the budget session could be held smoothly," said Pranab.
