2G scam: CBI seeks extension of A Raja and Shahid Balwa's custody

2G scam: CBI seeks extension of A Raja and Shahid Balwa's custody
New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today sought an extension of the custody of former Telecom Minister A Raja and DB Realty Managing Director and promoter of Swan Telecom Shahid Balwa. (Read: Who is Shahid Balwa?)

Appearing before the court, the premier investigating agency reportedly claimed that it needed more time to question Raja.

The custody of Raja and Balwa ends today.

Raja, the former Telecom Minister, who is accused of selling spectrum at throwaway prices to companies in 2008 when they applied for mobile network licenses, was produced in court for the first time in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The CBI had confronted both of them with documents relating to the 2G spectrum scam.

The duo was made to face each other and answer questions relating to the grant of licence and undue favours extended to the company during 2008.

The agency is also focusing on tracing the money trail that allegedly led from Swan Telecom to close relatives and acquaintances of Raja.

Swan Telecom was allegedly one of the two major beneficiaries of Raja's spectrum largesse when he was the Telecom Minister. Swan was granted a license for a little over Rs 1500 crores and subsequently sold stake to Etisalat, a Dubai-based firm for nearly Rs 4,200 crores.

The CBI had asked for an extension of Raja's custody last week on the grounds that he was not co-operating.

Sources told NDTV that the CBI will also decide by evening over when to call officials of Unitech Wireless, another company which has been named as a beneficiary in the 2G scam, for interrogation.

Despite denials from the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) of any wrongdoing, which is in the dock for its links with Balwa's Swan Telecom, the CBI said that it will continue investigations into the case.

The agency will also question all officials involved in the 2G spectrum scam.
