New Delhi:
For the third time in three days, security forces have been attacked in Chhattisgarh. On Saturday, Maoists attacked the Bheggi Police station near Sukma in Dantewada. Three jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in the attack while three others were injured.
Maoists attacked the CRPF men when they were inspecting a jungle site for a base camp for a possible relocation after a Supreme Court order that had asked the security personnel to vacate school buildings, police said.
There were at least 50 cops in the police station when the Maoist attacked, yet the Maoists were able to take away weapons. The rebels also issued an audio statement. "We demand an end to the anti-Maoist operations, withdrawal of the Army from Chhattisgarh, raise voices against land to be acquired for training camps and an end to the extra-judicial killings carried out by the security forces."
"It is unfortunate that the Maoists have attacked yet again. There have been three such cases recently. We are trying to improve the situation by mobilising our forces at the earliest," said Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.
On Friday, 10 security personnel were killed when Maoists blew up an anti-land mine vehicle in Katikalyan area of Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh.
Nearly 70 kg of explosives were used in that attack.
Seven Special Police Officers (SPO) and three police jawans were killed on the spot when their vehicle was tossed in the air by a powerful blast near Gatan village of the district.
A day earlier, four jawans were killed in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district when Maoists opened indiscriminate fire near the camp of Chhattisgarh Armed Force in Naraynpur district.
In New Delhi, officials feel these attacks are a backlash to the arrest of three senior central committee members including Varanasi Subramaniam of the CPI (Maoist) from Katihar district in Bihar last month, and the subsequent seizure of bank accounts of several lakh rupees, allegedly operated by the Maoists, and the decision to allow the Army to train in Chhattisgarh.
Alert on Andhra-Chhattisgarh border
In view of Naxal violence in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh Police have sounded an alert on Andhra-Chhattisgarh border.
"We have already alerted our policemen on the border and movement of security forces have been increased," Khammam district Superintendent of Police P Harikumar said.
