Four members of a farmer's family consumed a poisonous substance on Wednesday night at their home in Malthana village of Buldana district in western Vidarbha.
"They were rushed to a hospital where three of them - Dinesh Snyansingh Masane (35), Laxmibai Dnyansingh Masane (40), Suresh Dnyansingh Masane (19) - died on Thursday morning," Khamgaon Additional SP Yeshwant Solanke told news agency PTI.
The fourth member, Dnyansingh Sanu Masane, is said to be critical.
"The family members, all of whom were involved in farming, were frustrated by crop failure and worried about the repayment of a bank loan worth Rs 1 lakh-1.50 lakh," the officer said.
"They own a four-acre land where they had cultivated soya beans, but a pest attack ruined the crop completely," the police officer said.
The family's other surviving member, Chhagan, had gone out of the village when the four consumed poison.
