One policeman was killed and two others were injured after terrorists attacked a police check post in down town area of Srinagar, official sources said.
The injured have been shifted to a hospital and the area has been cordoned off to track down the attackers.
"One policeman has been killed, further details are awaited," said a senior police officer.
The victim has been has been identified as Assistant Police Sub Inspector Mushtaq Ahmad.
Officials say terrorists opened firing on Naka party outside GD Goenka School at Lal Bazar. Police repulsed the attacks but the attackers managed to escape, the official added.
Soon after the firing incident, senior officers and a large number of security forces rushed to the spot.
The attack comes when security is on high alert amid ongoing Amarnath yatra in Kashmir.
