Srinagar:
One soldier died and six terrorists were killed in two separate encounters in north Kashmir today. Two more soldiers were also injured in the encounters in Nowgam sector and Tanmarg in Baramulla district.
The army said four heavily armed terrorists were killed after troops foiled a major infiltration bid near the line of control in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district. The operation started on Thursday morning when the army intercepted a group of infiltrators.
In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed. Two more terrorists were killed after a 24-hour long gunbattle. One army soldier - Havalar Hangpang Dada - was also killed in the gunfight. The army says a large cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the site of the encounter.
On Friday morning, another gunbattle broke out in Tangmarg area of Baramulla district after police and the army launched a joint operation based on a tip-off about two terrorists hiding in a house in a residential area. After a seven-hour long operation, both terrorists were killed. Two security personnel were also injured.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said the increase in infiltration and spurt in encounters in Kashmir is "alarming."
