Dehradun: A three-year-old girl who slipped and fell off a ridge is among three people killed in Pithoragarh district in the last 24 hours as heavy rains continued to pound Uttarakhand, officials said today.
The met department's advisory for inclement weather continued for six of the 13 districts in the hill-state where nearly 6,000 people were killed in floods following unprecedented rains two years ago.
"A man in Pithoragarh lost his life when his vehicle fell in to the Kaali river which has been in spate since the monsoons began," district magistrate Sushil Kumar said, listing three deaths in 24 hours.
The State Disaster Relief Force along with the police has been trying relentlessly to look for the vehicle which was swept away yesterday evening but to no avail, he said.
Another incident took place in Darma valley when a mountain slip buried the operator of an earthmover of the state road maintenance group, he said.
Following the met department weather alert, the local administration and State Disaster Relief Force are on stand-by to prevent more untoward incidents in the next 24 hours, the district magistrate said.
The region will continue to experience thundershowers or heavy rainfall, posing severe difficulties to local residents with landslips and landslides riddling the roads, Mr Kumar said.
