Berhampur, Orissa: At least four people, including two babies died after a boat carrying 29 passengers capsized at Odisha's Chilka Lake, 95 km from Bhubaneshwar.
The incident occurred about 2 km from the shore when the motorised fishing boat on its way to Ghantasila from Sabulia, carrying 29 people, capsized in the lake after losing balance, a police officer said.
Locals say the boat was carrying more passengers than its capacity.
Four boats were rushed immediately to the location to rescue passengers. A search operation was also launched for the missing and four dead bodies were recovered. Local villagers also helped rescue teams during the search operation.
Most of the passengers were from Sabolia Village of Rambha block in Ganjam district. According to locals, the group had come to attend a marriage at Sabolia village and they were headed to Ghantasiala village for a picnic.
Twenty-two people were rescued immediately and rushed to Berhampur Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
"Six teams were deployed for the rescue effort. Two special scuba teams were also pressed into action for rescue operation," Binoy Behera, DGP (Fire Services), said.
Expressing grief over the incident, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for families of each of those killed and free treatment of those affected.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against two boatmen, Dutia Mallick and Bideshi Mallick, for illegally transporting people, Additional Superintendent of Police Gupt Mahakud said.
