The children from two schools in Malda district were injured after they panicked during the earthquake and tried to run down the stairs and out of the school.
Over 30 children were injured when they rushed down the stairs at the BSD High School in Ratua after the earthquake, resulting in a stampede.
A portion of the staircase of the two storey building reportedly collapsed during the stampede.
At the nearby Noymouja High School in Sujapur area of the district, at least eight students were injured, also in a stampede.
The children, all between the ages of six and 16, were rushed to near-by hospitals for immediate medical assistance. While 36 students have discharged, three others have been admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital.
