India COVID-19 updates: Active cases in national capital Delhi rise to 44,329 - its highest yet - with more than 7,800 new infections in a day, 91 coronavirus-related deaths.

New Delhi: The country recorded 44,684 fresh coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, taking its COVID-19 tally till now to 87.73 lakh, government data released this morning shows. The number of new Covid cases reported was 0.4% lower than yesterday's. In this period, some 520 people died fighting the novel coronavirus disease, which has so far claimed 1,29,188 lives in India. Total active cases dropped to 4.8 lakh as number of recoveries remained higher than new infections, although with a margin that seems to be becoming leaner. Total recoveries stood at more than 81.6 lakh as almost 48,000 patients fought off the viral disease in the last 24 hours.

  6. Daily coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu, with fourth-highest number of cases in the country, fell below 2,000 after nearly five months on Friday. With 1,939 new infections, the total caseload crossed 7.54 lakh while active cases stood at 17,748.

  7. Karnataka has revised its Covid safety guidelines for international travellers, who can seek an exemption from home quarantine by submitting a negative RT-PCR test report.

Meanwhile, Greece has become the seventh country, besides Denmark, United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, to find SARS-CoV-2 strain in mink at its farms, but the virus has not mutated. The discovery comes days after Denmark announced its plan to cull its entire population of 17 million mink after discovering a different strain of coronavirus in the animals.

In the US, which has been seeing a daily average of more than 1 lakh cases with over 1,000 deaths, a coronavirus outbreak has struck the US Secret Service, which guards President Donald Trump, President-elect Joe Biden, and the White House. However, Mr Biden's top coronavirus adviser said there were no plans for a nationwide lockdown even as three states jointly called for a halt in non-essential travel.

  10. France's nationwide lockdown to check the Covid surge seems to be bearing fruit in its second week as new and hospital cases dropped. Some 23,794 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, down from 33,172 on Thursday - half of last Friday's 60,486. The number of coronavirus deaths in hospitals increased slightly to 456.
