Tezpur, Assam: Five members of a family, including a nine-day-old infant, were trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam's Biswanath Chariali district bordering Arunachal Pradesh, a forest official said.
The six-member family were sleeping inside their hut last night when the jumbo, coming from nearby Behali Reserve Forest, attacked their house and trampled to death five members while a three-year old managed to escape at Thandapani in Behmari panchyat under Behali police station area.
The deceased have been identified as 35-year-old Maji Murmu, his wife Suny Kimbu, their 10-year-old daughter Lakhi Murmu, four-year old Mohagini Murmu and the family's nine-day-old child, the official said.
Their three old daughter was saved by the villagers, the official added.
The police reached the spot this morning and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
The All Adivasi Student Association (AASA) and AATSA today blocked the National Highway at Behali for one hour to protest against the forest department's 'failure' to protect the villages.
