Bahraich: Six people including four children who were returning from a village fair drowned after the boat they were in capsized in Uttar Pradesh's Saryu river today morning. Three others in the boat that was carrying nine people managed to swim ashore in Bahraich city, some 125 kilometres from state capital Lucknow.
All the people who drowned were returning from a fair at a nearby village, District Magistrate Ajay Deep Singh said. He said the bodies have been fished out from the river and sent for post-mortem.
Senior officers have reached the area where the boat capsized, Mr Singh added. Those who died have been identified as Rajesh (25), Brijesh (20), Magan (17), Vijay (16), Tirith (12)
and Shakil (12), said Additional District Magistrate Santosh Rai, who is at the site.
The Uttar Pradesh government in a statement said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will give compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of those who have died. Additionally, they will also be given Rs 5 lakh each through the Mukhyamantri Kisan Aur Sarvhit Bima Yojna, the statement said.
